PCIe Case Fan Mount

thumbnail

Overview

During the summer, my PC got very hot. My CPU started overheating, especially while rendering images in Blender. This led me to try to figure out how to add an extra fan to my PC case to increase airflow inside the case. The result was this fan mount. This mount allows one fan to supply air through either 3 or 4 standard PCIe slots.

It is made up of the main body, which is attached with PCIe slot screws, and the shroud, which slides on with friction and covers the sides of the fan.

I also made a shroud with a mesh grill and one without, as well as a 3-slot version in addition to the 4-slot version I made for myself.

Carbon Fiber

When I wanted to start making carbon fiber parts, I decided that the shroud for this PCIe mount would be a simple "trial" object to try out.

The first shroud I made was quite crude and did not look very nice; the weave was very distorted, and the corners did not stick very well.

Because the first attempt was not very good, I printed a new mold with a larger radius corner to help with the corners, and moved the cloth around less once it was laid. I also added a matte clear coat. The result was a much nicer looking part.
